It’s good news for all the Moodle educators and moodlers out there across the globe: Moodle released its latest version Moodle 3.7 on 20th May. And here is what you can take away from the Moodle’s latest release:
#1 A brand new Classic Theme
Themes are great for improving the look and feel of a Moodle site. In its Moodle 3.7 release, Moodle HQ introduces a new theme called Classic Theme. As you may have known this fact: the Moodle users can apply a theme to site, category, course or activity levels (See Moodle Docs on the topic).
The new theme is based on Bootstrap 4 and has the familiar three-column structure where the users can keep the blocks to the left or the right of the main content.
Moreover, you can customize the theme with preset background images, add branding colors to links, buttons, navigation bar, etc. Thus, you may the site look the way you want it to be.
#2 Dynamic Forums
Moodle HQ significantly enhanced Moodle forums by adding the latest features for better engagement of the folks. And here you can see the list of new additions:
· In-line responses
· Private replies
· Star and sort a discussion
· Manual locking of discussion threads
· In-page forum reply, and so on
#3 Personalized Messaging
In the latest Moodle release, Moodle HQ seems to have focused more on the user engagement front. The improvements in communication channels such as forums, messaging imply it. Here are some of the enhancements in messaging:
a. You can mute the conversations
b. Personal space for drafting messages
c. Teachers can delete group messages for entire group
d. A-see-all-messages link for overview
e. Now permitted users can post from iframes and so on
#4 Digital Credentials through Open Badges 2.0
Moodle 3.7 allows a Moodle site to connect with Badgr backpack. This new feature allows learners to carry their digital credentials – badges throughout their learning.
By the way, the badges are given to acknowledge your learning achievements.
#5 No Code for creating new Learning Analytics model
The latest improvements to the Moodle Learning Analytics help Moodle admin to create new learning analytics model, without the necessity to code. At the same, the admin can export or import the newly created analytics model.
#6 LTI 1.3 Compliance for safe and secure access
Moodle 3.7 is compliant with Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI) 1.3. So, what’s its use? Well, it primarily enhances the students’ privacy and security on the LMS.
Thus, the LTI provides a platform for the safe and secure integration of your learning applications (tools) and Learning Management Systems (LMSs).
#7 Fine-tuning Assignment
With the Moodle 3.7 version, a teacher has got the option to ‘not to show the grader’ to their students. Here are some other functional improvements:
· Teachers have also got the ability to ‘delete any assignment file submissions’
· Moodle 3.7 delivers improved statements for assignment submissions
